What is your favorite Vacation Bible School memory?
We are halfway through our Vacation Bible School at our church. It’s a lot of craziness and hard work, but it is great to see the smiles on the faces of those kids. I love seeing how excited they are about Jesus and the Bible.
Yet, I can’t help but wonder how much of a lasting impact is being made on these children. Will they remember what they learned and experienced ten years from now? a year from now? six months from now? a month from now? a week from now?
I have to be honest, I don’t have a lot of memories of VBS as a child. I remember petting a python at a VBS in Bartlesville, Oklahoma, though I do not have a clue what the snake had to do with what we learned. And that is pretty much all I have as far as VBS memories. Hopefully you are different than I am. Perhaps I am the exception, and the rest of you have many fond memories which have helped guide you all these years.
So tell me: what is your favorite memory of Vacation Bible School? It doesn’t have to be anything elaborate or life-changing (remember, my memory is of a reptile). Just tell me what your favorite memory is, as well as if and how it has helped you in your spiritual formation.

Singing the song “Booster, Booster be a Booster. Don’t be grouchy like a rooster. Booster, Booster be a booster and Boost our Bible School.”
I was always confused by that song. For the longest time, I thought roosters were grouchy, and then I met one. He wasn’t such a bad guy. VBS has been giving roosters a bad name for decades.
I have to agree with you. I really don’t have much recollection of what went on at VBS considering the years spent going. I vaguely remember singing in the auditorium and that the bible class lessons were taught through skits rather then telling a story and filling out papers. It was a fun spin on the norm.
I remember going to VBS at my cousin’s church when I was in middle school (early 90’s) and two guys came in one night and did our Bible lesson as “Hanz and Franz” of SNL fame… If I recall correctly, they were there to pump *clap* us up for Jesus.
While I don’t remember any specific stories or lessons, I do remember singing Onward Christian Soldiers; Booster, Booster and Tiptoe, Tiptoe and looking forward to cookies and Cool-Ade! Ialso remember always looking forward to it and having fun with all of the other kids. It was during the day when I went, because most of the moms didn’t work and were avaiable to teach. I wouldn’t worry about not remembering specific teachings. The teaching is important, but I also don’t remember many specific individual lessons from school even though I know I learned a lot. One of the things I learned from VBS was to love getting together with other kids who loved God and wanted to sing and be together.
